Melita Osheowitz is a self-taught painter born in New York, first arriving on the art scene at The Arts Company in Nashville, TN in 2001. Osheowitz paints with a relatable simplicity - indicative of the surrealists of the early 20th century, expressing complex notions of loss and rebirth. Her muted color palette and feathered brushstrokes create an expansive background. Her treatment of paint largely adheres to soft and subtle aesthetics to bring a focused intensity to themes of hope.

Deeply emotive, Osheowitz reacts to paint as if playing with clay: she builds a mystifying environment in which phantom memories serve as cautionary tales. Her unique style of painting brings notions of memento mori into the contemporary purview, with an egg as a symbol of new beginnings teetering on the edge. With a mythic wisdom, her work represents what needs to be delivered and protected. Her most recent work has taken on a more sculptural approach exploring and utilizing the materials as the subject matter. Inspired by nature, the process is organic and intuitive.

Unconventional and in tune with the natural world from the start, Melita Osheowitz’s organic artistic abilities are undeniable. Her awareness of how the blend and balance of design and the natural world can impact the senses was cultivated early on while growing up in the unique setting of Frank Lloyd Wright’s planned Usonia Community outside of New York City. Osehowitz’s process continues to be heavily influenced by nature and the human experience.
